What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a modern file format used by Apple on iPhones and iPads starting with iOS 11. It uses advanced compression algorithms to store high-quality photos in about half the file size of a standard JPEG. While great for saving storage on your phone, HEIC files often cause compatibility issues when you try to open them on older Windows PCs, Android devices, or specific web applications.
Why iPhones use HEIC
Apple adopted HEIC to solve the problem of high-resolution cameras filling up device storage. By using the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) standard for still images, iPhones can capture better dynamic range and more color detail while maintaining a small footprint. However, because it is a relatively new format, it is not yet universally supported by all software and social media platforms.
HEIC vs. JPG vs. WebP
- HEIC: Best for storage efficiency and quality on Apple devices, but poor compatibility elsewhere.
