The browser decodes the selected WebP file to raw pixels on an HTML5 canvas. Any transparent area is filled with solid white first, since the JPEG format that comes next has no alpha channel, and the result is then handed to the browser's own JPEG encoder for a downloadable file in this tab โ no server-side upload endpoint sits in this processing flow.
If the source WebP was itself saved with lossy compression, this run is a second lossy pass stacked on the first one, which the encoder cannot undo. JPEG output size and speed still vary by browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).

JPEG remains the most widely accepted image format across browsers, operating systems, printers, and photo services, which is the usual reason to convert away from WebP. WebP itself is well supported in current browsers but is still rejected by some older software, certain email clients, and some print or desktop-publishing workflows.

JPEG has no alpha channel. If the source WebP file has a transparent background, common in logos and UI graphics saved as WebP, this tool fills the transparent area with solid white (RGB 255, 255, 255) before writing the JPEG. There is no setting to change that fill color, and the transparency itself is not preserved. Check the source file for a transparent background before converting a logo or icon; a PNG target keeps the transparency instead.
If the source WebP was itself saved with lossy compression, this conversion is a second lossy pass: the JPEG encoder cannot recover detail the WebP encoder already discarded, and the two algorithms compress differently, so re-encoding can introduce new artifacts on top of the old ones rather than simply repackaging them. High (0.9) limits additional loss on an already-compressed source; Compact (0.5) stacks visible artifacts on top of whatever the WebP encoder already produced.
A WebP file is often smaller on disk than the JPEG this tool produces from it, since WebP's lossy encoder is generally more efficient at comparable visual quality โ expect the converted JPEG to come out somewhat larger than the source WebP even though no detail was added. Decode memory in the browser tracks pixel dimensions rather than the source file's compressed size: a 12-megapixel WebP occupies roughly the same 48 MB of decoded memory as any other 12-megapixel image.
